Youth Community Event

On Friday the Youth Cultural Connection Project held the Youth Community Event led by the  participants at Ukhanyo Primary School in Masiphumelele.  The event started with the dances and dramas prepared by the kids about challenges faced by the youth in their community. All of the grade 7 (over 140) came to watch along with the youth from Christian David primary school in Lavender Hill. The dramas portrayed the consequences of drug and alcohol use, teenage pregnancy, and HIV.  In between each drama, the youth prepared dances which entertained the audience. The youth from Christian David were very frightened when they first arrived at the school, intimidated by the new environment and kids.  Once the plays began and especially after watching the dances they relaxed and started to enjoy themselves. They were curious about the lives of the youth in Masiphumelele, and wanted to learn more about their culture and lives.
After the dramas, the participants were fed a meal of pizza, donated by Babbo, coke, palony sandwiches and cake. While the others were eating, many of the boys went outside and played soccer. We then started the community projects, splitting up into groups to work on the garden and the flower pots. A nearby garden center donated around 25 plants, bushes, and flowers which were planted in the front of the school. It was an amazing day and very inspiring to see the efforts of the youth to make their community a better place.
